New Sources

It’s easy to become so consumed with our everyday lives that we don’t make an effort to stay in touch with what’s going on in the world. We’ve all been there at one point or another. It can be humiliating when someone asks you what your thoughts are on a major news story and you have no idea what they’re talking about. In my early twenties, this was not a rare occurrence. It wasn’t that I didn’t have interest, but I just could not get myself to casually read CNN.com over lunch break. Over the last couple of years, I’ve discovered news sources that are catered to Millennials, with content that’s more digestible and captivating for a generation that has an attention span of 8 seconds. I’m now always up to speed on the latest news, and you can be too! Here are the best daily news sources:

1. the Skimm: I have to say that my top news source is the Skimm, a daily e-mail newsletter. Every weekday AM, I wake up to the latest Skimm in my inbox and read it on my way to the office. They highlight the most recent topics and summarize the key takeaways in a few sentences. It takes 5 minutes to read, and it’s witty and quite hilarious. They also build quick guides to get you up to speed on larger, more complex topics.

2. Flipboard: Ever wish that you could create a magazine that is customized just for you? Flipboard is exactly that. It aggregates information from across the web and creates a customized magazine that you can “flip” through via their mobile app. I particularly love that it links up with your social media accounts, so you can get the latest updates without having to login to each social platform separately.

3. The Young Turks: With over 2 million YouTube subscribers, it’s safe to say that the Young Turks is one of the largest online news shows out there right now. Known as a liberal social commentary program (hosted by Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian), they focus on drug policies, social security, climate change, the influence of religion, abortion and reproductive rights, sexual morality & more. I like watching a few videos while I scarf down lunch at my desk – great way to multi-task!

4. Twitter: I check Twitter pretty regularly, and I’ve found that it’s a great way to get breaking news while you see what you’re friends and favorite celebs are up to. Here are some handles to follow: @breakingnews, @slate, @cnnbrk, @twcbreaking, @buzzfeednews, @breakingtweets, @diggtop, @theskimm.
