DENIM ON DENIM. The concept of it is terrifying, yet intriguing at the same time. Up until recently, I’ve always seen girls rocking the denim on denim look and thought to myself – “DAMN…that looks chic, but how do they pull it off?!”. In the past, when I’ve tried this at home, it’s been an epic fail. I looked like I was wearing a Canadian tux, but like one my dad used to wear, not modern day Canadian tux if ya know what I mean (sorry, Dad). BUT, I think I’ve finally figured this out. The secret sauce, the magical combination.
don’t try to match the denim.
In fact, the less it matches, the better. When the denim is exactly the same wash & same color, it just looks like you’re trying too hard. Even a slight variance in wash & shade can make a huge difference. In this case, my jacket has a deeper less distressed wash, and it totally worked.
break up the denim when you can.
Wear a dress over jeans and a jean jacket over it, a long shirt (as I did in this case) or even a hoodie. If you’re worried your denim is “clashing”, this is the best way to break it up. Once you add a layer in between, the contrast between the two washes softens up.
make a statement with your accessories.
If you’re not making a statement with the pieces of denim (i.e. patched denim or ruffled denim), then be sure to add an extra flair with your jewelry & accessories. I paired this look with these funky block heel sandals and killer gold hoops. DON’T wear any denim accessories – it’s just overkill and way too early 00’s. One more thing, steer clear of western vibes (i.e. cowboy boots, western belts, etc). You don’t want your look to resemble a Halloween costume.
