In my early twenties, I jumped on every fashion trend out there, whether it suited me or not. I can’t even count how many times I’ve gone deep in my Facebook albums and shrieked in horror laughed myself to tears at my past outfits. I’ll spare you the details, but there were large abstract patterns with matching colored earrings & shoes involved #throwback. The good news is, after many fashion failures, I feel like I’ve FINALLY gotten a better handle on what trends are worth investing in. One I’m particularly loving lately is the oversized trench coat (I mean, you’ve already seen me rock this thing here & here…clearly can’t get enough). It’s a trend that anyone can pull off, and it’s SO easy to style! How to wear a trench coat three ways –
COMPLEMENT IT WITH AN OVERSIZED SCARF.
Oversized everything! This is the best way to style your trench if it’s chilly out. Oversized scarves are arguably the chicest way to stay warm. When we went to a music festival in San Diego a few weeks back, Leo and I were both wrapped in my ASOS scarf (I swear it got chilly at night!) and he basically was convinced it’s the best thing ever (which, duh, I agree). I love how the two oversized pieces complement each other while making a statement on their own.
WEAR IT OPEN, LET THE WIND CATCH IT (seriously, though!).
On a less chilly day, you can leave the jacket unbuttoned and showcase your outfit underneath. Leaving a trench coat casually open looks effortless, and who doesn’t want that?! You can drape it off of one shoulder if you’re going for the EXTRA effortless look. I’ll def be styling it this way once spring rolls around…like WHEN IT ACTUALLY FEELS LIKE SPRING haha.
BELT IT, WHILE WEARING ONE SIDE SEMI OFF-SHOULDER.
To make things more interesting, you can wear the trench coat belted (with either the belt it comes with or a statement belt), and slightly off one shoulder. I like the look of a statement sweater peeking through, it adds a little extra flair. Another option is to wear a simple crew neck sweater or tee shirt & add a statement earring or bold lip.
