Let me start out by saying, it’s f*cking cold out y’all. Chicago is supposed to be colder than some parts of ANTARCTICA tomorrow. I’m staying indoors all day and praying nothing bursts or breaks while I’m hibernating. I’ll be trying to catch up on all of the Oscar nominees – namely, Roma and A Star is Born (I STILL haven’t seen this- where the F have I been).
In addition to hibernating and catching up on all the best picture nominees, I’m currently brainstorming how I can break free from this perpetual cycle of ankle boots & sweaters.
One thing I’ve been experimenting with (since I am literally DREAMING of summer rn) is how I can sneak in a summer piece here & there to 1. keep me sane and 2. spice things up.
Here’s how I’ve been winter-ifying my summer pieces –
tights.
Layer a thick pair of tights under a summer skirt or dress, and you’ve officially winter-ified it! I prefer opaque tights for a more dramatic look & feel – you can do a pop of color if you want to be adventurous, solid black, OR (what I’ve been obsessing over lately) white tights. Yes, like the ones you used to wear to church for Easter at age 6. Those ones. I’ve even seen a surge in patterned tights or ones with logo patterns. Make your tights the statement piece as opposed to a neutral layer!
turtlenecks.
Now, I’ve already gone into my obsession of layering turtlenecks under practically everything, so no need to dive deeper on that topic. But, turtlenecks are a great layer to add under a summer top or knit, or dress! Whether the piece is short sleeve, long sleeve, sleeveless (or even a tube top – seriously), a thin ribbed turtleneck will winter-ify it in an instant. PLUS, you’ll look way more chic, because it’s what all the fashion babes are doing.
layered knits.
This one is a no-brainer, but layering some sort of knit over (or under – can’t think of when you’d do this, but I’m not ruling it out!) a summer piece. A cardigan, wrap sweater, pullover. Even a hoodie could look super cool over a flowy summer skirt. With this look, I took a statement scarf and belted it over my silk dress. I love the idea of bringing outerwear accessories inside (I wear beanies all day REGULARLY), and a belted scarf is a fresh new way to approach that same concept.
